From 2006

Strategic advisor at Schuttelaar & partners, a consultancy office focussing on issues relating to agriculture, food and health, technology and corporate social responsibility (https://www.schuttelaar-partners.com/).  Besides several projects on sustainable agriculture, I contributed to the setup of the Dutch Choices Foundation (www.hetvinkje.nl), a multi-stakeholder cooperation stimulating producers to improved the food and helping consumers to choose the healthier food products. Food industry, retail, caterers are working together with scientists, government and other health promoting organisations to stimulate consumers to choose products with a front of pack logo. As secretary of the scientific committee I am responsible for the development of the product criteria behind the logo, the market control and scientific research on the effectiveness of the logo. As spokesman I represent the foundation in social media, give interviews for the press and on TV. As secretary general of the foundation, I am coordinating all activities at the office of the foundation and perform part of the stakeholder management. Also at the Choices International Programme (www.choicesprogramme.org) , I am secretary of several regional scientific committees setting the criteria for the logo in Europe, Latin America and world wide.

 

2001 - 2005

Food toxicologist at The Netherlands Nutrition Centre. The Nutrition Centre is an objective organisation set up by the government to inform consumers on all aspects of food. I collected and published (website, articles in national journals)  background information on most important subjects concerning food toxicology, food safety, genetic modification and sustainable agriculture. As spokesman I gave presentations for dieticiens and students and interviews to the media (journals, daily papers, magasins and television). In addition I was responsible for stakeholder management on these subjects.

 

2001

Freelance writer for The Rathenau Institute (The Hague, The Netherlands). Writing a discussion document on genetic engineering and the acceptance of genetically modified food.

 

1998-2000

Post-doc scientist at The Nederlands Cancer Institute (AvL/NKI) te Amsterdam. Project: The effect of gen-environmental interactions on DNA damage in cell cultures and in vivo models of mismatch repair deficient mice.

 

1997-1998

Visiting scientist at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC, Lyon, France), financed by a IARC-fellowship. Project: The role of microsatellite instability in the process of tumor formation. This study concerned the role of the mismatch repair system in the carcinogen-induced microsatellite changes. It involved the set up of an in vivo mouse model to study the role of Msh2 in carcinogen-induced carcinogenesis, as well as the study of DNA-mutations in in vitro cell culture models.

 

Ph.D. research

1991 - 1996: Agrotechnological Research Institute (ATO-DLO) in cooperation with the Department of Toxicology, Wageningen University. Thesis: Changing gap junctional intercellular communication in mouse epidermal cells during tumorigenesis: a study on underlying processes. Part of the work was conducted at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC, Lyon, France).
